Kim's Convenience

I went to the Grand Theatre on Thursday and saw Kim's Convenience. I must say, it was exceptionally well done. There were times when I was laughing and times when, I am not ashamed to say, on the verge of tears. It is about a Korean family that has moved to Canada for a better life. It has stereotypes, yes, but so does life, unfortunately. It is kind of a true story, written by Ins Choi who also is an actor in the play. (It is one of those plays where the actors travel and perform together. )  one thing that was interesting was how mondern it was. Usually plays are not really old, but not really recent either. This play was written only 3 years ago. They mention the 2010 Olympics and other recent things. In fact, they mention 2013, so obviously they have changed it so that it really seems like it is happening now. That has a bigger impact than you might intially think. I think the reason it has done so well is because it hits so close to home. (And of course, the acting is great as well).  Regardless of ethnicity, everybody had to immigrate at some point so everyone can relate. I highly recommend going to see it. Here's a fun fact: due to its startling success, the play is doing a tour of Canada and it is going to be the Grand Theatre set that goes on tour with the actors. How cool is that?

P.S. this is post 200! (Wow..)

THE HUNGER GAMES (not actually, but yea)

That's Myra in the front shaking hands.  The baby in the back is just the sheet folded to look like a baby.
Due to the excitement of THE HUNGER GAMES, I forgot to tell you about the play that I went to see on Thursday.  Based on the true story of Myra Bennett, Tempting Providence follows a nurse who has just moved to Newfoundland from England after the war.  She came upon hearing that medical help was needed.  The play started running 10 years ago (you think it would get tired...ha ha ha, get it?), and the same actor has played Myra from the beginning.  The two men (there are only 4 actors) have been with it for 9 out of 10 years.  The other girl has only been with them for a year.  Another interesting point is that the play is preformed with 6 props: 4 chairs, a table and a sheet.  Originally it was just done with the chairs and the table, but the sheet was added in there at some point.  It is amazing to watch the actors manipulate the objects into whatever they need their surroundings to be, whether it be a cradle with a baby or a garden with a fence.  Also, the actors never leave the stage.  There is a carpet that everything happens on.  If their character isn't needed (all of them except for Myra play multiple characters) they just stand at the edge of the carpet.  I think I will most likely just forget about this play due to THE HUNGER GAMES.  My friend went to go see THE HUNGER GAMES over the weekend, so I finally had somebody to talk about it with who wasn't there with me.  Another one of my friends is planning on seeing THE HUNGER GAMES tomorrow, so I will be able to talk to her about THE HUNGER GAMES then as well.  Saying THE HUNGER GAMES is so much fun. :)  Most likely thing to happen though is that THE HUNGER GAMES will fade into the background after a few weeks.  Maybe THE HUNGER GAMES will come back again when the DVD comes out, but other than that, you probably won't hear about THE HUNGER GAMES until November of next year.  That's when CATCHING FIRE, the sequel to THE HUNGER GAMES, comes out.

Free Time

The play last night was good overall.  There was nothing on stage for the entire play, every prop got rolled on or off at some point.  The transitions between scenes was very very well done, I was impressed.  On the other hand, there were definitely some scenes that I thought were bare, as in lacking props.  The stage almost seemed too big for what was going on.  But other than that, very well done.  I'm doing the Coldest Night Of The Year walk tomorrow, I reached my goal for raising money, so I'm pretty happy.  My school's semi formal dance is tomorrow ("go to school on a saturday?" as my brother said), but I decided to do the walk instead.  Yeah, that's right.  Making myself look good by walking 5km (that's right, 5km [not actually that far I'm sad to say...]) and raising money for homeless people instead of going to a dance.  To be honest though, dances don't really appeal to me that much, so it's not that big of a deal, like I'm making it seem.  Oh well.  Might be kind of lonely while walking.  I mean, my youth group will be there, but I don't know how much of them are going to show up.  My friends who come to youth group with me said they would do the walk, but they decided to go to that dance instead.  (Honestly, I'm not that surprised, but don't tell them I said that).  So I'm gonna bring some music to listen to and just walk along side...somebody.  There is one person who I kind of hang out and know well that's doing it, so I'll probably walk with her.   Wish me luck...we're supposed to be getting a snow storm :(
Speaking of free time (or lack thereof), did any of you notice the poll I put up?  Don't bother looking, it's gone now.  It 'closed' a few days ago.  Well, I'm guessing you didn't notice or you did and just didn't vote.  The way this connects to free time BTW is that the poll asked what you do with your free time.  Only one person voted and they voted for '...what free time?!?'.  :D Sometimes I couldn't agree more.
This is a picture of The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss.  I really want to see the movie!

Long Time No See

Whoa...been over a week since I posted? What is the world coming to??? Anyways, Sherlock was amazing and has the WORST CLIFF-HANGER EVER!!!  Sherlock died as expected...but then came back...also as expected.  The way he came back though is you see John Watson crying over Sherlock's grave, wanting Sherlock to magically come back (ironic, no?).  Then as John walks away the camera pans over to Sherlock watching John from the trees.  And then it ends!!! So you know he's still alive, but not how!!!! Torture!  My friends and I have our theories: a biker knocked (more like purposely pushed) John over as he ran to Sherlock after he jumped off the roof (how he 'dies'), so John doesn't see Sherlock right after he jumps.  Also, before he kills himself, Sherlock talks to Molly (a person who works at the hospital and is good friends with Sherlock) and he says 'I need you' as in her help. Then you never see Molly again.  And last but not least, Mycroft, Sherlock's brother, told Moriarty, Sherlock's greatest enemy, all about Sherlock and his history. But then Mycroft talks to John about apologizing to Sherlock and that might have something to do with it. (Also, Mycroft is art of the British Government so he has a lot of power).  On another note, going to the grand tonight, can't remember what play it is, either The Great Gatsby of Tempting Providence.  I'm more interested in seeing TGG now than I was originally now that I've read the book.  Better go study for T and T, I have a test tomorrow.  It's a short week this week, only one more day!
This picture is refering to the Weeping Angels in DW.  "The Weeping Angels had a unique and nearly-perfect defence mechanism: quantum-locking, which caused them to turn into stone when being observed.  It could also be done by instinct, when they believed they were being watched. When not being observed, they could move incredibly fast, though they appear to slow down the closer they get to their prey. However, quatum-locking meant that they had to cover their eyes when in their stony form; if they saw each other they would be trapped forever. Though they have normally been seen to resemble winged human women, they can appear in many statue forms, meaning any statue could be a Weeping Angel." (I didn't write that...)  So yeah, that's what the pic is about...  A DW Weeping Angels lesson for you there! :)

Do I Know You...?

Who knew tuning forks could be so much fun? I didn't.  We did a lab in physics today with tuning forks, so we were all playing with them and putting them next to our ears.  Probably not a good idea.  I have a headache now.  Oh well.  I'd do it again :)  Rule number one when you are trying (but not really) to watch what you eat.  I just had a slice of cake and now I regret it.  My brother has a peanut allergy, so we often have to read the ingredients to make sure it's ok for him, but then you know how processed and "fake" some of the foods you eat really are.  It youth group night again, where did the week go? It is deal or no deal themed tonight, not really sure what that means.  I have learned not to get to excited about event based on their names, because the youth leaders often make up their own version or we only do it for a part of the evening.  But it's fun anyways.  I don't have much to say, I still have a bunch of shopping to do.  Oh, and Cinderella last night was really good.  Did you know that the actor playing prince charming was in the Hairspray movie?  Actually, so was the actor playing the stepmother.  but get this, they had never met before the show before. Apparently this is really common, if you are not in the same scene ever, you most likely won't meet other cast members.  Also, movie take so long, you could be filming the same movie months apart.  So it was pretty cool to see them find out they were in the same movie.  I'm gonna go watch Hairspray and find him.

Christmas Time

I have no homework tonight!!!  Freedom is sweet.  I watched a couple episodes of Glee, we are working our way through season 1 (we are renting the DVDs).  I have to say, even though the way they make them singing the song seem natural and somewhat plausible is just plain sad, I enjoy watching it.  I am going to see Cinderella at the Grand tonight, the second show of the season.  Every year they pick a family appropriate play during Christmas, so as a family we always went to see the "Christmas special".  But now I see all of them through the student club.  I am really looking forward to seeing this one.  It sounds so magical.  Just another great Christmas feeling.  The week is almost over, I can't wait until the weekend!
