BFFLAATs Take TO: Take 4

The yearly tradition of me going to visit Emily (and now Alison) in Toronto for a weekend continues. I was able to stay for a little longer this year because I don't have school on Fridays. I arrived Thursday evening and we went to see Mariah Carey perform at the unveiling of The Bay holiday windows. There was a large crowd filling the street and we weren't sure where Mariah would be performing. We did manage to eventually worm our way further into the crowd, but we still couldn't see a stage. Mariah eventually came on stage after the Mayor of Toronto and CEO of Hudson's Bay Company spoke for a few minutes. We couldn't see her at all, but there was a screen that was projecting the whole thing. I did see her at one point when I jumped above the rest of the crowd and I caught a glimpse of her in her predictably red dress. Add Mariah Carey to the list of famous people I've seen with my own eyes.

On Friday we went to Snakes and Lattes Board Game Cafe. It took us a while to walk there, but it was worth it. They have so many different games. We played one called Sushi Go Party, which once we got the hang of it, was a lot of fun. It's a card based game by Gamewright, whose games I've played before and enjoyed. We played a number of games and ended up staying at the cafe for the whole afternoon. We headed home and made dinner (pasta with a rose meat sauce - very delicious) with our friend Justine. It was really good to be able to see her again.
Saturday morning I took on the role of model for Emily's roommate, Nicola. She was doing a photography assignment on lighting and needed a model, so I was assigned to the role. It was a lot of fun, and also something I'm not keen to do again. It feels great to have your photo taken and to have the fancy lights and reflectors, but staying in the same pose for an hour at a time or trying to recreate a pose multiple times get tiring. For one position, I was leaning all of my weight on my crossed leg and I promptly lost all feeling in my lower leg. I could touch my foot and I didn't feel anything. When we were done it took me 5mins to try and get feeling back in my foot again. I can't wait to see the photos though. I'm sure Nicola made me look much better than I usually do.
After the photoshoot was done, we headed to a cafe that made #freakshakes, which are these milkshakes that have entire desserts perched on top of them. I got a surprise version, which came with a chocolate milkshake topped with Nutella, whip cream, a mini cupcake, two powdered donuts and lots of sprinkles. They also offered a version which came with a full size donut and a fudgsicle on top. On the way to the cafe we stopped in this store that has a bunch of random props everywhere, including these absolutely massive picture frames. It was a really neat store to look around in.

For dinner we went to a pub type restaurant across from the movie theatre, where we each got poutine. Alison got a popcorn chicken poutine, Emily got a smoked brisket poutine, and I got the poutine sampler which came with the standard poutine, the popcorn chicken poutine, and a pulled pork poutine. It was delicious.
Of course, the tradition of the visit to Toronto is to see the next Hunger Games movie. Unfortunately those are finished now, so we found another movie with a November premiere date that we all wanted to see. Thus, after we finished dinner we crossed the road to the theatre to see Doctor Strange. It was a really good movie, and pretty different from other Marvel movies. But they still managed to tie it into the MCU. And I'm very happy to hear that Doctor Strange will be making appearances in future Marvel movies.
I had to leave fairly early on Sunday morning to come back to Stratford, so Emily made pancakes for breakfast and I was off. I got a ride with my friend Mara, so the ride was much more enjoyable than riding public transit. I ended up going skating at one of the Stratford arenas in the evening with a couple of guys from GBDA. It cost $5 which might be a bit much for skating, but it was enjoyable. I'm not quite at the level of skating as the guys I was skating with (they both play hockey), so at the beginning we were spread out on the rink. After a while we were starting to tire, so we just started doing laps together and chatting. There were only 6 other people on the ice, so there was lots of space. It was an adults only skate as well, so there wasn't any kids which was nice. It was good exercise. I set a new record on my Misfit (fitness tracker). The way the misfit works is you get points based on how much you move. It's approximately one point for 100 steps, but if you're doing something more intense than walking, you get more points. Unfortunately, I think some things got mixed up with the time change, so things aren't registering correctly. But I reached my daily goal of 600 points with just the skating.
A very busy and enjoyable weekend!

Catan > Bowling

It is with mixed feelings that I let you know that the SSC event for tonight - bowling - has been cancelled, after my last post boasted of the success of the club. We had 6 people sign up, but then two backed out, so we decided to cancel it. Hopefully our event next week will do better. I think bowling was a bit of a stretch for people anyways. People would rather watch movies or go to pubs together.
The upside of bowling being cancelled, on the other hand, is that Mara, Marissa and I are now going to play Settlers of Catan instead. I'd choose Catan over bowling any day. I'm especially excited because I've 3D printed two resource hexes (rock and wood), so I'll finally be able to put them to use.
We might be co-hosting an event with the GBDA Society next week for a horror movie night. Only, Mara, Marissa and I are not interested in watching horror movies. So basically, we're just going to help promote the event and then not watch the movie.
Our professor asked us today to bring half a dozen cardboard boxes to class tomorrow. He didn't elaborate at all. Where the heck am I going to get cardboard boxes? I might go to the LCBO across the road and see if they have any I can use. He also asked us to bring tape "or anything that sticks". I ain't bringing my tape and having it all wasted on what I'm sure will ultimately be a useless exercise.
Speaking of which, I should tell you about our guest lecture with Jordan. First of all, Jordan is my favourite Stratford Campus staff member. I was very excited when I heard that he would be guest lecturing in our class. The class consisted entirely of us playing with Little Bits and Makey Makey parts, both of which are electrical circuit toys for kids. He was using them as a representation of the Internet of Things and how all the parts interact. It was basically 2hrs of goofing off. Perhaps the more entertaining thing was everybody's snapchat stories. Just about every snapchat story I looked at that day was of people showing the Little Bits and saying things like "what even is university" "Engineering at UW" "#GBD4". But it was actually kind of cool because you could connect it to your laptop and play one-button games by interacting with the Little Bits.
I'm currently working on updating my personal website for a e-Portfolio project I have this term. And no, I won't tell you what the URL to my site is. Not until I'm done with it at least. It looks fine, but I'm thinking of changing the layout, or at least the colour scheme. It's also horribly outdated.
One last thing: I'm very excited for the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie, not just because the first one was awesome, and not just because I'd watch Chris Pratt in just about anything, but because of tiny Groot! He's way at the bottom of the poster, by Starlord's feet :) I'm going to be freaking out the entire movie purely about Groot *he's so cute*

A !#FFFFFF Christmas

I suppose I could take one of these depressingly-not-cold nights to write a blog post (my mother gives me looks when she checks my blog and there isn't a new post). I wish there was snow, to be completely honest. I miss needing to bundle up in scarves and gloves to go outside. And I can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss shovelling snow. It was always a time that I could exercise, enjoy the outdoors and have quiet time to myself, all in one. So I'm a little disappointed there's no snow and it's been weeks since the temperature dropped below zero.
I was thinking that we shouldn't call it Christmas Day, but rather Christmas Hour(s). Because there's the Christmas celebration in the morning, but then the rest of the day is just any other day off (except for Christmas dinner). My grandma is visiting and we had my aunt and cousins over for a few days. It was god to be able to see them again, even if I didn't hang out with them that much :/ We had the classic turkey dinner with all the side dishes. My favourite is always the stuffing. My dad has started making the stuffing outside the turkey and while he thought he would never admit it, he likes it better that way. In no small part because now you can make so much more stuffing, which is good news for me :) Eating recently has been a bit of a struggle because I got my wisdom teeth out a week ago. I'm no longer in any pain, but I can't open my mouth all the way. Which I only notice when I'm eating, which has caused me to dwell on how I use my mouth. I never really thought that I took particularly large bites, but evidently I do. Nevertheless, eating takes me a while (bad news for securing seconds and thirds). There has also been an abundance of baked goods around which is bad news for my waist line.
The one big notable gift I got this year is a drawing tablet, which I've been wanting for a while. It let's me doodle and draw and have it show up on the computer (I thought this was common knowledge, but everyone I've told about it has asked me what it does). I also got a lot of tea and tea related merchandise. I asked for a temperature set kettle, and I got one, which I'm so happy about. My dad doesn't understand this, but if you make some teas with boiling water, you can burn the tea and give it a bitter taste. To prevent this, I usually wait for a while after the kettle boils before making my tea. But now, with my temperature set kettle (I don't know if that's what it's actually called, it's just a term I came up with) I can make my tea right away. My brother got me a earl grey tea sampler from The Tea Haus. Now, when I think sample, I think enough to make one or two cups. The box was a decent size, so I was expecting 10 or 12 different samples. Instead, it was 4 full sized bags of loose leaf tea. Like the bags that DavidsTea comes in, packed full. It's a lot of tea. I've only tried one so far, but I really like it. My sister got me a tea steeper that looks like a little man chilling on the edge of your mug. It's pretty cute.
I really want to see the movie The Imitation Game. My parents have also expressed an interest in seeing it, so I have high hopes that I'll be able to convince them to go see it in the near future. This evening we watched Grand Budapest Hotel. If I had to give a quote to promote the movie, I would choose "Visually intriguing". It was not what I expected (mind you, I didn't know much about the movie going in). The cinematography was very different that most movies today are; kind of indie? It actually kind of reminds me of 500 Days of Summer in that way. Not really what I was expecting, visually different than the status quo and generally a good movie (in my opinion, at least).
I just finished reading We Were Liars by E. Lockhart and wow. What. An. Ending. I think I mentioned it in an earlier post and gave the book description, which ends with "And if anyone ask you how it ends, just LIE." That was what got me interested in the book in the first place. And it lived up to it. The beginning of the book was a little slow, but worth it for the ending. (And no, I won't tell you the ending). Now I want to try and read one more book before the end of the year to complete my goal of reading 20 books this year. Something I want to do in the new year is read more often. Because this past year, reading was put on a back burner to school and surfing the internet. Less tumblr, more reading. And creativity. I was given some art inspiration for Christmas, and I want to make a real effort to try and be creative more often. I may also steal J's idea of getting rid of something everyday. It probably won't be everyday, and being away at university will make it hard, but I want to make a real effort to get rid of things I don't need. Because Lord knows I have way too much stuff. Kijiji, here I come.
I have a ton more stuff I want to write about (like Elliott's birthday party, Boxing Day shopping, how the break is almost over, and saying "saucy" in a British accent to my Grandma), but I want to go to bed before the sun comes up, so I'll draw this to a close.

The Holidays Have Arrived!

I'm done 2A! Wow. That's wild. But I'm glad I'm done. I'm so ready to go home and be all Christmas-y. :) I can't wait to decorate the Christmas tree and make gingerbread. Also, there are so many movies coming out that I want to see! I am so excited to see The Imitation Game.
I went to bed last night at 11 because I knew today would be a long day, what with having two exams and all. But I couldn't fall asleep until 4am. Part of it may have been the fact that my roommates came back from their night out at 3am, which probably pushed back the falling asleep. But it most definitely had to do with the Asians in the penthouse above. I've never seen them myself, but my roommates say that Asians moved into the penthouse earlier this month. And I can hear them moving around occasionally, no big deal. But there have been a handful of times when they've played music late at night (they're fans of Adele). Now, it usually doesn't bother me because I'm awake and (usually) not doing anything terribly important, so I let it slide.
Last night, however, is a different story. As I mentioned, I was trying to sleep so I would be well rested for my exams. And as I lay in bed, trying to fall asleep, what sound should come through the vents but none other than Asian karaoke. At least, I'm pretty sure it was karaoke. The voice sounded very separate from the music. Regardless, not what I want to be listening to while falling asleep. The worst part was that it wasn't constantly playing. A song would play, and then there'd be a couple minutes of silence, and then another song would start up. And that's worse than one song after the other, because during the pauses you can't help but have hope that it's over. You all know what I'm talking about; when something is pissing you off and you think it's stopped. But deep down inside you know it hasn't. And the longer the pause, the larger the hope grows. Only to be crushed again, seconds after thinking, "This is definitely it. It's got to be over".
So that went on for a couple of hours. I was seriously considering contacting the police or whoever it is you're supposed to contact about noise. Well, I say seriously. When the thoughts were running through my head they felt pretty serious. But in reality, if I had called someone, I first of all would have had to get out of bed, which would guarantee not falling asleep. Then I would have had to put real clothes on to go talk to them or something. Not to mention the fact that I don't have minutes on my phone so calling someone would have costed me money. Anyways, I didn't call anyone. (But I did imagine the conversation I would have had with the officer, had I decided to call them.)

I'm so excited to make gingerbread.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

If you hadn't heard, the new Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser trailer came out yesterday. Originally, it was supposed to come out on Tuesday next week but when a crappy version got leaked on the internet last night, this is how Marvel responded (the bottom tweet came first):

But this just shows how the internet has changed the entertainment industry. Marvel knows that once a leaked version is out there, people will hunt it down until they have seen it. So rather than have fans watch an illegally downloaded version, Marvel just decided to release it.
This trailer is just the teaser trailer, which often doesn't reveal much of the storyline and is mainly action scenes, but this one is over two minutes long. This is giving me very high expectations for the real trailer.

Oct 3

Today I went to see Crazy For You at Festival Theatre in Stratford. It was really really good. And so funny! My type of humour: sass, snappy, quick witted. It was beautiful. One of them was two guys standing beside each other and one says, "...well you're pretty close to an idiot!" And so the other guy steps back. I was laughing so much. One of the scenes was two guys that were dressed the same being drunk and it was hilarious. I think the season is basically done now, but I would highly suggest going to see it. (10/10, would recommend to a friend). One of the friends I went with tweeted about it and Stratford Festival replied to her saying, "What a great way to start the weekend, see you soon". And then after the show, one of the actors favourited her tweet, so that was pretty cool.
But now I'm back to the grind...I have so much work to do this weekend.

Happy 10th Anniversary to the release of Mean Girls!  Went shopping in the states today, and may I just say something? If you have to pin the clothes smaller to fit your mannequins, it probably means that there is something wrong with the size of your mannequins. I only saw it once, but I've definitely seen it multiple times, in both the states and in Canada. Ridiculous. Anyway, got some great deals! Went to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier this evening with my friend Croissant. It was so good to see her again! Aaaah, she makes me so happy every time I see her. And the movie was really good too.

I believe in yesterday

I swear our house only receives phone calls when I'm home all day and there is nobody else to answer it. Seriously. There have been 5 (update: 6) phone calls this afternoon. This is ridiculous. Also, I've been wasting a lot of time on sporcle.com recently. I did a quiz to see if I knew John's speech that he gave at Sherlock's grave (I do. I'm not sure if that's something to be happy about or if I should start crying...).
I'm just going to continue this post now, even though I started it yesterday. My hair appointment took longer than expected, and then I went to see Divergent with my BFFLAAT. It was so good! And it was so good to see my BFFLAAT again (I can't wait to be seeing you every day again!!!! CAMP!!!) I got some red highlights. It was a long process because the first time she did them, they didn't show up, so she had to put in some highlights and then put the red dye back in. But I'm happy with how it turned out. It's definitely going to take some getting used to.

I never blog when I'm at home...

wooohooo! Home again, this time for good. Well, for three weeks at least. Then I'm off to camp (which I am so excited for!!!) I honestly did not think I had so much stuff, but the entire back of the van was stuffed full with all the stuff I had in my dorm room. It's a good thing only my mom came to pick me up, because otherwise somebody would've had to sit on the roof on the way home. But it's good to be back, even if it's only for a little while. We watched Monsters University this evening, which I hadn't seen before, and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty funny. And I loved the short film, The Blue Umbrella. I'm going to sewing tomorrow morning (9AM *sigh*) to hopefully get some more work done on a quilt I'm doing for someone. I haven't done any sewing in almost a year.

Something I read a while ago really annoyed me. Theo James, male lead actor in Divergent, gave an interview for the Cineplex magazine. He was talking about how the movie had some really deep characters and how it was about nature vs nurture and he was putting his philosophy training to work. I really appreciated the deeper analysis than the "OMG she loves him but he doesn't love her, or does he?" He says "....Essentially, it's a question of are you restricted to one way of thinking? And the answer, really, is no." I was thinking to myself, I really like Theo. And then, and then. The author of the article goes, and I quote, "It's heady stuff, but let's not forget Divergent is also an action-packed love story aiming to attract The Hunger Games' crowd and make stars out of both James and the film's lead, Shailene Woodley."

-Brad Pitt passed out plates and napkins to the crowd, while Kevin Spacey took pizza to hand out in the cheaper seats.

-Meryl Streep is wearing a white dress, but she did not care about stains. She wanted pizza and damn it, she was going to eat pizza. And that's why she's the best human.
-Jennifer Lawrence definitely got her hands on a slice, because duh. Girl loves her food.
-Ellen reminded the pizza guy that Kerry Washington is pregnant and that "she needs some." You all did see how fast the Scandal star's hand shot up when Ellen first asked if anyone wanted pizza, right?

-Jared Leto took a slice, but insisted to the camera that it was for his mom.

Thought #2: I don't know if this it old news or not, but Brad Pitt fINALLY CUT HIS HAIR.

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole Macklemore look on him, but anything is better than the long hair he's been sporting since the beginning of forever.

Thought number 3: WHAT THE HELL DOES RUSSIA THINK THEY'RE DOING INVADING UKRAINE??? This could quite possibly lead to something bigger like  WWIII and I do not want that. No invading. Please.

Thought Num Four: this ever changing numbering system I've adapted is part homage to Margo Roth Speigleman and her Capitalization Equality (Paper Towns, John Green), part me being not myself, and part pissing me off because it is not me.

Thought Integer 5: Yo I got 85% on my econ midterm which is way better than I actually did because the prof bell curved the marks. I actually got 70%, which I'm still pretty happy with. I've done worse. (The class average was 49%. Out of 40, the highest mark was 31 and the lowest mark was 4.)

Thought Number Sei: I can't believe February is over already. On the other hand, that means it is now March and I will soon find out if I got the job at FCC. I CAN'T WAIT.

Thought # 7: I'm trying to watch all (well, most, really) of the Oscar nominated films before the Oscars happen, which I will be watching tomorrow evening. I even printed off a ballot card :) So far I've seen The Wolf of Wall Street, Her, Gravity, and American Hustle in the Best Picture category.  So far my favourite is Gravity. It was truly an amazing movie, I really liked it. I enjoyed Her as well. I wasn't a huge fan of American Hustle, which kind of disappointed me. I didn't end up finishing it. I'm going to watch 12 Years a Slave this evening. (I've also seen Frozen, Despicable Me 2, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, Start Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3 which are nominated in other categories).

Thought # Eight: I need to choose my courses for the fall term this week. Problem is I can't find the list of courses I'm required to take, so I don't even know how many electives I have to choose.

Thought number nove: I painted a Weeping Angel paint-by-number style and I really like how it turned out. Unfortunately for you, I'm such a lazy butt that you don't get a picture. At least not today.

Thought num 10: I should probably start reading one of 5 chapters I need to read this week but screw it it's the weekend I watched two hours of photoshop tutorials I'm going to do some fun reading.

The outing with Josh was ok. We walked over to the plaza and got bubble tea and sat in the store while drinking the tea. We just chatted. We haven't talked a lot so we were just kind of getting to know each other better. But we're both awkward at having conversations, so that makes things interesting. The way he keeps conversations going is he'll say "tell me a story". Or "what is there exciting about you"? And I'm not sure how I feel about that. I mean, obviously we would both like there to be conversation, and not silence, but he backs out and forces me to come up with a new conversation topic. I would be okay with it, but he does it every time there's a lull in the conversation. He was shocked to learn that I'm half Chinese (he literally was taken aback when I told him my last name). But apparently I don't know enough Asian stuff, so he's going to teach me all this Asian stuff? He's shocked that I don't read comics. (Like, he has a thing for over-reacting a little bit. But I think that is going back to the awkward conversation; he doesn't want to seem like he's not interested, so he goes over the top.) Says him, who has a comic book as one of his textbooks and doesn't want to read it -_- I convinced him to watch Frozen though. I told him I would watch the Batman series if he watched Frozen. But it's not like I actually have time to watch movies right now.

I have a memory of holding hands recently for a strange reason. Like the reason I had to hold hands was weird, not the fact that I have a memory of it. But I can't get at it. Lethologica. So the clear memory I have of holding hands was with Ryan, who is in my program, my art class and lives in Renison. I am not great friends with Ryan, he's not really the kind of person I would hang out with normally, but I don't know anybody else in my art class, so yeah. We had just come back from our art class and Uthi, a girl on my floor also in GBDA and who is closer to Ryan, was walking through a hall in Renison. Ryan said, "Grab my hand and start skipping. We're going to freak Uthi out." He didn't really give me a chance to even think about what he had said, so skipping down the hall I went, holding hands with Ryan. We both had huge grins on our faces and were acting like we were the happiest couple to ever walk the earth. We passed Uthi and her mouth just dropped. I have to admit, it was pretty funny.

My Life: A Summary

- minimum of 5 hours of studying each day

    - 2.5 hrs each for econ and business (I'm doing a chapter a day; I thought it would take me 45mins to an hour for each chapter, since I'm just reviewing what I've already read, but it's been taking me at least two hours)

- doing an image for my bookwork assignment for my art class

- which never turns out how I imagine in my brain

- so that just depresses me

- cause my hands are not the artist my brain is

- lack of sleep

- second and third winds, preventing sleep when I can actually have it

- drowning my sorrows in tea and baked goods (Timmies has these really good red velvet muffins right now)

- I like tea better with sugar, I've discovered

- which, you would think, wouldn't be a big deal

- but it is because the caf has sugar

- and I don't. So now if I want tea with sugar, it has to be when the caf is open

- which is never when I feel like tea

- going on an awkward outing with a boy that likes me

- drinking bubble tea on said outing

- which, quite frankly, was disgusting

- there's this kind of middle aged man that works at Renison, doing maintenance stuff and odd jobs and whenever I see him, I just smile. Cause he seems like one of those guys that would just be really great to hang out with, like he would always be happy

- I'm sitting by a window and these two squirrels keep running back and forth

- two mid-terms, a presentation, three chapter readings, and an assignment all (due) on Friday

- residence weekend brunches are my fav meals of the week because they have baked beans and pastries

- eating said pastries despite the fact that I already had a muffin

- I forgot to mention earlier that the muffin I got from Timmies was fresh baked; that's the pro of being up early, they've just opened and so everything was still warm and soft and gooey on the inside

- listening to Coldplay's "The Scientist"

- this post is taking longer to write that I originally thought

- apparently my time judgement is just completely off these days

- I went to the bank

- but forgot it was Sunday and the morning

- so it was closed

- so I couldn't get the loonies I need for laundry

- so that will be interesting when laundry day comes around (Wednesdays)

- I read on the bus

- because that's the only time I can find to read

- and I've really missed reading

- my tea has gone cold because I've been too busy typing to drink it 

- strawberry danish and red velvet muffin down, bread pudding to go

- I was going to try and stop eating to much in the pathetic hopes that I would look half decent in my bathing suit next week

- but to hell with that

- I can't even get excited because I have so much stuff to do

- including packing for next week

Probably Anderson. Everyone hated him up until season three, where he was the only one who believed in Sherlock. And I really liked learning more about him in this season. But I'm still not a huge fan though.
