Costumes

Here are some of the costumes I saw today:
- witch
- luffa
- Mario
- Luigi
- fairy
- Bananas in Pyjamas
- mime
- Edward Cullen (it was kind of scary how good of a costume it was. He looked like RobPattz, had shimmer stuff all over his face and dark circles around his eyes. He had a grey dress shirt and jeans on and he carried an apple around all day. He even kept this pained expression on his face!)
- Captain Crunch
- mermaid (the daughter of one of the employees of Renison)
- scarecrow
- gypsy
- cat
- angel
- Isabella from Phineas and Ferb
And me, as Mary Poppins! I am pretty happy with how my costume turned out. (Even thought it ended up costing me way more than I thought it would).
My floor also decorated:

It was hard to take picture because it was so dark. But here's what we did: we covered the walls and doors with garbage bags, hung cobwebs, a scary ghoul thing that moves when you open the door, bats, little ghost guys, bones on the floor, etc. We covered the lights with red tissue paper so everything glows red. Then we took red paint and put handprints on the garbage bags. My favourite part is we got cards that make sound and put them in the door hinges, so now when you open the door, you get sound effects! One screams and makes the duh-duh-duuuuh sound. The other one is the Harry Potter theme song, which I'm not really sure how that's related, but whatever. Oh, and we have a motion activated talking pumpkin :)

Happy Halloween!!!

Also,

I'm really craving a milkshake right now. Which reminds me, I forgot to mention something from my sushi outing. I HAD DEEP FRIED ICE CREAM. And I have NO regrets at all. It was delicious. SOOOO good. Seriously, you should try it. It was warm on the outside, cold on the inside :)

Marching Bands

My ARBUS professor showed this at the beginning of class today. I always knew that US universities went all out on marching bands, but this blew me away. Imagine playing an instrument, most likely a wind instrument (so you are constantly blowing) but ALSO walking around, AS WELL as having to know where you are supposed to me at any given moment. All at once. I would not be able to do that.

Doctor Who

I just took a test to figure out what Doctor Who character I am. I am an Ood.
I'm not too sure about the appearance, but I like the Ood. At least, when they're not possessed/evil:

This is the description it gave me:
You are quiet, exceptionally bright, with an innate love of music. Like the telepathic Ood, you've always been attuned to the needs and desires of others, and you have a caring disposition. Rather than filling your life with "things" you prefer to live a humble existence within a calm, peaceful community of friends.
Beware - your passive nature can make you vulnerable to manipulation!

I think it's a pretty accurate description!

McDonald's Monopoly

If any of you have Ventnor Avenue of the yellow colour block, we should pool our resources and win the $10,000.  (I also have St James Place and Illinois Avenue, if you were looking for either of those).

Full Night

A few days ago, I overheard some people talking in the caf about a game involving zombies. I assumed it was some sort of video game. However, near the end of their conversation, they started mentioning buildings on campus, calling them safe zones. It was then that I realized that they were talking about a real life game that they were planning on playing. And they’re playing it alright. Right now. They have been, all day. There are people running around the entire campus with bandanas tied around their limbs. Guns strapped to their backs. And long strings of socks hanging from their hands...? From what I’ve seen and overheard, there are humans and zombies. I would assume that if you get caught by a zombie, you become one. It was funny because you hear all these people casually talking about all the zombies around campus. :)
Some friends and I went out for sushi for dinner. We were going to go to this one place, but when we arrived, we discovered that it was going through renovations. Luckily, there was another sushi place down the road. So we went there. Now, I don’t know how the rest of you handle all-you-can-eat sushi situations, but when my friends (from home) and I go out, this is how we do it: we all kind of say what we want to order, then when it comes, we just eat whatever. However, when my friends (from university) and I went, I employed the same order a bunch of stuff for everyone. However, two of my friends only ate what they ordered. They practically refused to eat anything else. So I was stuffing my face to avoid the you-didn’t-eat-everything-you-ordered charges because I had ordered for everyone. Also, we had a time constraint because we were going to see a movie afterwards. So while it was good, not the most pleasant sushi outing I’ve ever had. I saw the Fifth Estate. Mainly I was seeing it because Benedict Cumberbatch was in it. I enjoyed the movie. It is definitely a “smart” movie. You needed to pay attention. I think I would have enjoyed and followed it better had I a greater knowledge and understanding of WikiLeaks. I was really tired when I got back to res, and was planning on going to bed, despite it only being 10:30. But then my friend asked if I wanted to watch Iron Man 3, and I couldn’t very well turn that down, now could I?

Ladies and Gentlemen!

My roommate did laundry! And I mean, did laundry, with a washing machine and everything! Never thought I'd live to see the day.
Also, I just found out that Carly Rae Jepsen did a cover of Part of Your World from the Little Mermaid, and I am not okay with that.

Haunt (Demo) - Bastille

We'll make our agreements,
About when to meet,
And I'll leave you in the doorway,
The cold evening aches,
As it leaves in its wake,
All the memories left by the day,
And I'm questioning why,
As you look to the sky,
That it's cloudless up above our heads,
And thoughts come to mind,
that our short little lives,
Haven't left the path that they will tread,
They will tread

I come back to haunt you,
Memories will taunt you,
And I will try to love you,
It's not like I'm above you,

The wisdom we learn as our minds,
They do burn'll,
Entice the naivety in youth,
As adults will grow and maturity shows,
The terrifying rarity of truth,
As you turn to your mind,
And your thoughts they rewind,
To old happenings and things that are done,
You can't find what's passed,
Make that happiness last,
Seeing from those eyes what you become,
Well you become

I come back to haunt you,
Memories will taunt you,
And I will try to love you,
It's not like I'm above you,

I will see you there,
See you there,
See you there,
I'll come back to haunt,
Memories will taunt you,
And I will try to love you,
It's not like I'm above you

I am currently in class, watching a movie about Helvetica. A movie, about the font Helvetica.

a movie about a font

update:
Soooo many companies use Helvetica as the font in their logo, it's acutally kind of sad.

Boom. All Helvetica, with slight variations. Italics, rounded off, a small change on a single letter. You get what I'm saying. Helvetica.

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH

And that's the American air date! BBC has yet to reveal when they will be airing Sherlock season 3, but it is 99.999999% likely to be before then, if not on the same day.

Chocolate Milk....

My roommate just tried to put a glass of chocolate milk in her kettle. I mean, like the entire glass. The glass cup from the caf, full of chocolate milk, into her kettle. Thank the Lord it didn't fit. I'm too scared to even ask what she was thinking.

Brownies

I asked my family over thanksgiving weekend if I could make brownies in the waffle maker. They thought I was stupid. Yeah, well look:
Next time I'm home, this is happening, regardless of what my family has to say about it.

Money, Money, Money

On my little expedition to the library, I also stopped at the bank to get some loonies and quarters for laundry. I was going though the quarters to see if I had gotten any special ones when a shiny loonie caught my eye. I pick it up and realize that it is an American loonie. It didn't look familiar so I wondered if it was a special design coin as well. Then I realized, the US doesn't have loonies! So now I am just very confused and wondering if I got gypped a dollar...

What Phone Case(s) Should I Get?

Library

I applied for a Waterloo Public Library card since the university libraries are basically all academic books. I needed a piece of ID that had my proof of address on it. Despite all of the paperwork involved in applying to university and residence, there was not a single piece of paper that had the Rension address on it. So I figured I would ask reception if they had anything I could use. They didn't, but they sent me to Karen, the Head of Housing (or something like that) to see if she had anything. She was busy, so I figured I would check my mail box, which is across from her office. And I had mail! It was a belated birthday card. It wasn't until I was cutting out the stamp on the envelope that I realized the obvious. This envelope had my name and address on it! So, armed with my envelope I headed off to the library. Despite the chill in the air, I figured I would walk there and get some exercise. Only to discover that the road I needed to take was under construction. So I started walking through a park, hoping that it would stay parallel with the road and get me to where I needed to be. And while on this adventure of not really knowing where I was, what building do I see but the activities complex where OFLO2013 was held? Grateful for the familiar surroundings, I got my bearings and made my way to the library. The "Waterloo Public Library" signs helped, too. And after everything I went through to get the ID, she didn't even ask to see it. It was one of those scenarios where you know that if you take an umbrella it won't rain but if you don't, it will rain. Get what I'm saying? Anyways, I got a book out of it all so that's what really matters I guess. On the way back I saw a costume store so I popped in. I got a hat for my Mary Poppins costume. I'm still working on finding a skirt....

The Enemy - Andrew Belle

The Enemy by Andrew Belle, from Black Bear

My heart gets lost like a message
My head is on the clouds
And I don’t get it
And so I’m fashionably numb
Sometimes it helps to forget
Where we come from

Out of the mire we were torn from
Remember
Out of the fire again
But I’m an ember
I hold a banner for you
But it’s upside down
You got a question or two
But I’m tongue tied now

Don’t try to follow me
I would
Hold you down if I could
Make you the enemy
I would
Let you down

I took a ride on the champagne
You took a flight over San Fran Bay
We washed misunderstood
Your heart was warm like a brother’s should
But then the gallow gave way
Sometimes they call after you
But you say

Don’t try to follow me
I would
Hold you down if I could
Make you the enemy
I would
Let you down

I hold you down
I hold you down
I hold you

Google :)

A while ago I made a post about some cool things that Google does, and I just found about another one! You should Google  "atari breakout" and click on images. Enjoy!

Things We Forget

I don't know if you guys ever noticed the Things We Forget widget on the side of my blog, but it is one of my favourite blogs. It's this girl (at least, I'm pretty sure it's a girl) who writes up little sayings on Post-Its and leaves them to their fate in public places. I think it's such a neat idea. I always love reading what her notes say. And I think that the name of the blog is so accurate. I would love to just show you them all right now, but that would be a lot of work (and copyright infringement???). So I have it on the side there. But you should definitely check it out: Things We Forget. I am always so uplifted after reading them.
(And a gift idea for me would be one of her posters!!!!!)

Showers

For the second time in the past month, my floor does not have hot water. I've even heard that one of the showers has brown water. Which I would rather not think about. Thankfully I took a shower at home on Tuesday, but unless this problem gets fixed, I won't be able to have my Thursday shower. So apologies to those who are going to see me on Friday! At least before I get home again and I can have a shower. Weird, right?! I'm going to be home again this weekend after a whooping two whole days back at res. On the plus side, I have my two midterm reviews written up. Now all I need to do is actually go over the stuff. Which, I have to admit, is the harder part. Ah well. For some reason my astro prof wasn't in class today, so the TA was giving the lecture. He did a good job, but you could tell he wasn't going into as much detail as the prof would, simply because he doesn't have the years of experience. The TA had such an innocent lost and worried and nervous vibe about him that I found adorable. I can't really explain why. Anyways, since he wasn't going into as much detail, he got through the slideshow pretty quickly. I'm talking, we were excused at 8:30pm. The class starts at 7 and goes until 9:50pm. With the delayed start because he couldn't figure the projection system out (there's the innocence again) the actually class probably lasted about 75 minutes. Hehe.

UGH

I just found out that my Astronomy exam is on Dec 19th. THE 19TH. That is the second last possible day of exams.  My only other exam is on the 2nd. Why can't my astro exam be like on the 3rd or something! Cause then I would have 33 days off (yes, I counted). I'll probably still go home in between, but now I'm going to spend those two weeks worrying and studying. I'm sure it will be one of those situations where I would rather just get it over with rather than postpone it.  I'M SO MAD. Day ruined, to say the least.

Genie Problems

Fashion

I don't think of myself as a fashionable person. I don't think that I dress poorly, but I definitely am not up with the latest trends. My sister was (is) always more into that kind of stuff than I am. On Friday, I was wearing a jean shirt, black leggings and a cream infinity scarf with brown boots. I thought it was a pretty good outfit, very "in" and "ready for fall". Mainly it was comfy though. However, I would like to point out that my sister, the fashionista of the family, on Saturday, then proceeded to buy that exact outfit. Boo yeah baby! Hehehehehe. That's all.

Late Night Driving

I went home for Thanksgiving weekend. It was great to be able to see my family again. I got a four day weekend, because I don't have classes on Tuesdays. It was one of those times when it seems like the world should still be on pause because you are, but it's actually not. Other people had to go to work and school. Not me! :)  I had the chance to see 3 of my friends this weekend, which was awesome. It's hard to believe it had been over a month since I last saw them! It was great to just hang out with them. My dad very kindly drove me home tonight, so I didn't have to take the bus. At one point when we were on the highway, there was this old blue Ford pickup truck. (Might I mention that it is dark out). It didn't have it's lights on. None. Zilch. Nada. At one point they had their 4 way flashers on but then they turned them off again. It was then that the importance of lights really sunk in for me. We had passed it, and looking in the mirror, you could not see it at all. It's as if it wasn't even there. A little after that, they were trying to pass somebody, so they put their 4 way flashers on again. Then they made the bone-head move of going into the merging lane. Yeah, I don't have any lights, but I'm gonna go into the lane where there are incoming cars. Great idea. Not. Then just as we were turning off the highway, they had their normal lights on! And its like, Where were those for the past 15mins?! People these days. But other than that, it was a great weekend. Thing is, I'll be back home on Friday. FCC is having a Fall Banquet on saturday and it's just easier if I go home for the weekend to get to the banquet. So I'll be away from home for a whole 2 days! I don't think I'll make it. I really don't.
Also MIDTERMS. Those bastards snuck up on me, big time. I need to start studying! But you know that I'll still blog because I procrastinate. Well, not really procrastinate, but more just not studying as hard as I should be. Is that procrastinating? Either way, I'll likely still blog. Mostly about my panic, though.

I've never been really up to date on the world's doings, but I am aware that the US Government is about as good as dead at the moment. And I have no idea whether this is from the shut down or not, but I just died laughing.

sorry for the language

UPDATE: I found another one. This one is pretty funny as well.

The Government shut down explained the best way.

Cold As...

Today in my astronomy classroom it was kind of cold when we came in. The prof commented on this and said that it should warm from our heat (he tied it into our lesson about radiation). But halfway through the class it was not warmer, it was most definitely colder. Comparable to outside. I never took my jacket off and had my scarf on the whole time. At the end of class the TA took us to the roof of the building to help us locate Algol, a star that we are doing an assignment on. It was cool to be on the roof and looking at stars, but it was so cold! I was thoroughly chilled after sitting in a cold theatre for 3 hours and then standing outside for half an hour. I can't wait to get my warmer clothes!

How Did it Go?

The Italian poem, that is. Let me tell you how it went. After my half-hearted attempts to memorize it, I felt guilty and tried a different route. I put the words to the tune of the song Royals by Lorde, hoping that maybe the familiar tune would help me remember it. It didn't. More often I just got distracted by the actually lyrics. Going to bed feeling guilty having not memorized it, only to go to class this morning and. And. AND. He goes over the poem again with us, focusing on the days of the week in includes and then drops it. IT WAS COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY TO MEMORIZE IT.

This was basically my train of emotions when I realized that there was not need to memorize it.

The Lazy Shoemaker

My italian prof asked us to memorize a nursery rhyme about a lazy shoemaker. Now, memorizing 12 lines in a day is hard enough, let alone lines of a different language. I'm pretty good about the first half, but it pretty much falls apart after that. But! It's important to remember that
If only I had the will- and brain-power to make it happen. I'm not feeling great. I think it's a mix of the food I ate and I'm tired. Which I'm slightly confused about, because I've been sleeping fine lately. And my left forearm hurts. I'm not sure why. At first I thought it was just from leaning on it, but the feeling hasn't gone away. It almost feels like I've pulled something.
I'm going to try a new approach to memorizing this poem. I've recorded myself saying it and put it on replay in the background. Maybe it will seep into my mind. No, but then seriously, I'm going to read along with the recording and just hope for the best, cause I'm going to bed soon.

Halloween Costumes

I was just looking up ideas for Halloween costumes. If I do decide to dress up, I might be Mary Poppins. But while I was looking, I saw this, which I just thought was the best costume ever. I know my one friend would love it!

I have much respect for this man.

UPDATE:
I was just having this fantasy, that if I did dress up as Mary Poppins and was walking around campus, I say a guy dressed up as a chimney sweeper. We would talk because of our matching costumes and then he turned out to be the one: CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW CUTE OUR "HOW DID YOU MEET?" STORY WOULD BE?!?

I am a firm believer in the idea that the reason the 1D fan base is so big is because of the total lack of other boy bands at the moment.

Ugh

You don't know how badly right now I want to scream,
"SCREW IT ALL, I'M GETTING FACEBOOK."

Carry On My Wayward Son Lullaby

Apparenlty this has some fangirl-heart-crushing-relationship to Supernatural. (All the feels, as they would put it), but I don't watch Supernatural. I just like the song.

Friday Lunch

I decided this week that instead of bringing a bag lunch to Stratford, I would buy lunch. There are so many different places to eat! Anyways, I decided to try Boomers Gourmet Fries. Only to arrive and find out that it had been on You Gotta Eat Here!, a Canadian TV show similar to Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I thought it was pretty cool to eat at a place that had been on TV, if not very tourist-y. I had Meatball Poutine: fries, cheese, red sauce and meatballs. It was pretty good. I only got two meatballs though.

But before all that happened, I had the closest thing I've ever had to an outing with, gasp, a boy. I know, I know. But don't get your panties in a bunch. He asked me where I was going for lunch, and I said I was thinking of the fries place. He said cool, and did I mind if he came? I said sure. So we're walking down the street and he's telling me about how this morning he was all rushed and forgot his wallet. And I was thinking, Wait, if you don't have your wallet, how are you getting lunch? (I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that it only occurred to me as I was writing this that maybe he was going to use me to buy him lunch. But I don't think he's that kind of person).  Anyways, we're walking and I go to cross the street. Half-way across I realize that he isn't beside me. I look back and he's standing on the curb. I just look at him with a questioning look. Once I reach the other side, I'm not quite sure what to do, so I just keep walking. Another block down he catches up to me and says that his friend offered to buy him lunch and then he leaves. That's it. Never spoke to him again. I was like, Ok then. And then went and bought my lunch. I'm not sure where we stand exactly. Was I supposed to offer to buy him lunch? And what if I told you that he's the uncultured swine?
